The NCCCO crane operator certification for Fixed cab mobile telescopic cranes has a subcategory for Service Truck cranes. Meaning, by earning your certification for the NCCCO Fixed Cab Crane Operator Certification you will have also earned your service truck cranes. After successfully passing the NCCCO written and practical examinations, you will receive a certification card indicating both Fixed Cab (TSS) and Service Truck crane (STC) designations.
Service truck cranes can be seen mostly in the service and repair industry, municipalities, mechanical industry, oil and gas industry, forestry, and more. Service truck cranes tend to have shorter telescopic boom lengths with lower lifting capacities. These cranes are typically operated by a remote or control.
Riggers will assemble, attach, and secure a variety of loads using tools such as slings and hooks so that cranes can safely perform a lift.
Signal persons are the crane operator's eyes and ears on the ground when the operator is performing a lift. Signal persons are responsible for guiding operations and signaling to the operator what action must be carried out.
If you fail one or more of your practical examinations, you can enroll to take your retest at any of our open enrollment locations. The retest fees for one practical exam is $495 and retesting for two practical exams is $895. To avoid retest fees, we highly recommend purchasing one of our hands-on training packages starting at $165 per hour.
An independent contractor hired by the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) administers the Written exams and an accredited practical examiner administrates the Practical exams.
California Crane School invented the 3 consecutive day crane operator certification program and now offers a 5-day program for beginners like you! Regardless of what course you choose to attend, the objective remains the same. After the completion of our course and successfully passing the NCCCO examinations, you will have demonstrated that you have the minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities to become a Certified Crane Operator. Save time and money by choosing CCS’s program and you will still have accomplished the same outcome! To top it off, our 5-day program will also add two additional qualifications under your belt: Rigger and Signal Person. While other schools may offer similar attributes, California Crane School has the guarantee to back it up. We guarantee you will pass the NCCCO written tests after our class or the next class with us is free.
Good luck getting a crane job without it! Put yourself in an employer's shoes. Pay a couple of thousand dollars for a crane operator certification for one of your newly hired employees. Then your newly certified employee takes a job at the company across the street for $1.00 an hour more. The employer is then out a bunch of time and money. Or they can hire a candidate with an existing crane operator certification that is ready to work and eager to learn! The answer is clear. Why would an employer even consider giving a job to a candidate without a crane certification? By getting a crane operator certification you help minimize the hiring risk, as virtually all of the employers out there will attest to this.
If you have never operated a crane before, we highly recommend you enroll in our 5-day program for beginners. This will allow you to get 16 hours of field time (8+/- hours of seat time) and additional classroom instruction. Plus, you will have not only gained your NCCCO Crane Operator Certification by the end of this course, but your ACS Rigger/Signal Person qualification too! Sometimes the less a candidate knows about cranes the better they will do on the Written exam. The reason for this is: candidates that have been operating cranes for years learned things a different way than the books want them to do it. This makes it more difficult for them to unlearn their ways and learn to do it by the book. This is what they are tested on with the crane certification exams.
You should familiarize with all of the crane hand signals but the ones that will be the most important for the practical exam are:
Again like in task 1, you must know how to control the headache ball (overhaul ball). Swing from the start circle to barrel number 1 (when you have the headache ball under control, don't stop and stare at it, drop it down into the barrel where the white stripe on the ball goes below the rim of the barrel without knocking the barrel over or moving the barrel more than 2" (it is ok if the hook or headache ball make contact with the barrel) than when you are given the signal, proceed to barrel number 2 and do the same thing your time will stop when the headache ball is removed from barrel number 2.. Hint 1 when practicing try to remember the boom angle of where the barrels were located. Hint 2 Keep in mind, the clock is ticking. (optimum time 3:30)
Like in task 1and 3 you must know how to control the load. There are point deductions for everything you knock over, if the load touches the ground, if the 3' chain attached to the bottom of the test weight leaves the ground, and if you go over your optimum time, Hint 1 If you are not an experienced crane operator ar you are not familiar with the crane don't show everyone how cool you are using all of the cranes functions at the same time. Use 1 function at a time but don't let the load stand still, keep the load under control and moving through the course. There is plenty of time if you can control the load and this 1 function at a time method is used. (This will ensure that because you might be nervous you do not grab for the wrong function) Hint 2 When you are on the way out of the course on task 4B do not get nervous at the end. Many times crane operators get nervous at the very end of the crane practical exam test course and mess up what could have otherwise been a good run. Hint 3 Its understandable that you are nervous. If you loose control of the load: 1. Stop 2. Think 3. Act do not immediately react or you might just make it worse. This will ensure crane safety and successful completion of your crane practical examination. (optimum time 3:00 each way swing cab telescopic boom crane) (optimum time 4:00 each way fixed cab telescopic boom crane)
NCCCO requires that candidates take their NCCCO practical exam 180 days from the time of sign up. If candidates exceed this 180 day period, they will need to repay for the practical exam.
The final deadline to enroll is one week before the NCCCO Crane operator certification written examination date. In other words, it is 5 days prior to the beginning of the class. When enrolling within 2 weeks from the class, NCCCO charges a $50 late fee. To avoid this fee, enroll in the course of your choosing as early as possible.
No, you do not need a drivers license to attend California Crane School. However, your current or future employer may require you to have a active DL. If you have a DUI, you can still attend California Crane School as well.
